Selected Works from Fall Semester Spatial Studio, taught by Bruce Chao
Cultural VesselI created this as a representation of myself as a Chinese American. It is a traditional Chinese porcelain瓷器 (ciqi) vase, with patterns of blue on white, made completely of Chinese idioms, phrases, poems, and English phrases. These phrases were what catered my growth as a Chinese growing up in America. Both cultures have constructed my current identity, and I would be lacking if I had to forego either one for the other. Hence, I wanted to make a physical representation of a that by creating a vessel that can be seen both as being constructed with both cultures and containing both cultures.

NatureSun shining through a foliage has always intrigued me, with its irregular shapes and interesting shadows. I wanted to recreate that feeling indoors, where this kind of phenomenon does not occur in. Hence, I created three branches from wire and paper and shone a light through them to artificially create this naturally existing phenomenon inside a human constructed space.

SimulacraWe were assigned to recreate two household appliances but without any of its original materials. My first object was a microwave, made with cardboard, hot glue, screen, plastic bags, and duct tape. The microwave can open and close just as an actual microwave would. My second object was a toaster. I recreated this toaster out of dough and paint. As the dough melted, the toaster started sagging. I thought that was an interesting aspect of my piece, hence I decided to make the sagging a part of my documentation.

3D Line
Rebar Wire, Piano Wire, Steel Wire. We were given these three types of wire to recreate an animal by using all the wire, without cutting any of the wire. It was an exploration of drawing in a 3D space, as wire in space can be seen as similar to a pencil on paper. I decided to recreate a curled up flying squirrel through the use of contour lines. Although the 3D feel was not as powerful as it could have been, it still created a nice effect and study of concavity.
